Meet Fathers Bruce and Joe & Staff

Father JoeSaints Martha & Mary has two priests serving the congregation. Fr. Joe Hopwood is our vicar. He recently returned from sabbatical at Saint John's University's Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research during which he was working on his book.  We are also extremely fortunate have Father Bruce Henne, an engaging pastor.

Fr. Joe is known for his caring manner, children's story time, thoughtful sermons, and great sense of humor. He is a serious priest who does not take himself seriously.

Fr. Bruce, a native of Michigan, moved here most recently from Storytime with Father BruceIdaho, but has known Fr. Joe for more than 25 years. He has a wonderfully humorous and teaching preaching style that emphasizes how our lives connect with the Gospel.  He does not preach from text or even from the lecturn. If you are looking for a "high church" service, don't come here.  Bruce says he has, "a hard time not giggling if there were a high church service (with lots of candles, incense and formality.)"  Father Bruce has many interests to share with our membership including, but not limited to,  photography and astronomy.

Joe is a former junior high science teacher and college biology professor, and as a father of four children and 10 grand children, Joe and his wife Barbara understand the real world needs and concerns of others.  He's been at Saints Martha and Mary in Eagan since 2002.

Currently Joe is studying the intersection of science and religion, particularly how lessons from biology might speak to our own spiritual regeneration. Fr. Joe enjoys recreational reading when has some time. He likes mysteries by S. J. Rozan, Janwillem van de Wetering, J. A. Jance, and Dorothy Simpson, biographies and non-fiction in espionage, in addition to keeping up in theology and the sciences. He enjoys architecture, architectural design and drawing, construction trades, woodworking, remodeling and building things.

Fr. Bruce enjoys collecting and polishing Lake Superior agates and likes photography. He and his wife Penny have been at M&M since September.
